Daily Bible Podcast Day 364 – Revelation 15-18

Scripture:
“For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority, until God’s words are fulfilled.” ~Revelation 17:17

Observation:
The kings of the earth will abdicate their authority to the beast so that God’s purposes will happen. Even the aggrandizement of the beast, which would appear to be bad is something that God has ordained in order to carry out His will.

Application:
There are many things in life that are obviously working in opposition to God’s will. Ultimately, though, I don’t need to be afraid of them, since even obviously evil things can be allowed in order to bring God’s plans about.

Prayer:
Father, I trust You that Your will will be done on earth, at least in the end. Help me not to be anxious about the evil that I see in the world. I know that it is being allowed for reasons that I don’t fully understand, but so that ultimately Your purposes will be fulfilled.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 253 – Lamentations 3-5, Revelation 15

Scripture:
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.'” ~Lamentations 3:22-24

Observation:
The Lamenter (as it were) is experiencing unspeakable hardship. He has seen his people destroyed and those left behind are starving. Yet, what does he do here? He acknowledges God’s goodness and faithfulness. Even though he is likely hungry, he says that God is his “portion” and that he will wait for Him. The Bible certainly operates from the idea that all people are deserving of God’s wrath, so that the amazing restraint, love, and forgiveness that God shows is amazing.

Application:
I have only a little experience with hardship. That I have experienced I can’t say that I was very good about God being my portion or that I waited patiently for Him. I have, however, been angry with God even though, “he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone,” (v. 33) and the fact that God doesn’t owe me anything.

Prayer:
God, I know that You don’t owe me anything, but I’m still upset about some of the things that have happened. Show compassion and healing if You will, but either way help me to rely on You and find You to be enough for all my worries and needs.
