Daily Bible Podcast Day 365 – Revelation 19-22

Scripture:
“And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” ~Revelation 20:10

Observation:
We win. Satan will someday be captured and unable to deceive any longer.

Application:
This is a reminder of whose side I need to be sure that I am fighting for. I belong to God, but am I working as one who wants to win His reward?

Prayer:
Father, thank You that I am among those who believe in the name, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I look forward to Your ultimate victory, even as I wonder at Your timing. I know that Your ways are perfect, so I do my best to be patient. Help me to make good use of my time until either the end comes or my end comes.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 364 – Revelation 15-18

Scripture:
“For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority, until God’s words are fulfilled.” ~Revelation 17:17

Observation:
The kings of the earth will abdicate their authority to the beast so that God’s purposes will happen. Even the aggrandizement of the beast, which would appear to be bad is something that God has ordained in order to carry out His will.

Application:
There are many things in life that are obviously working in opposition to God’s will. Ultimately, though, I don’t need to be afraid of them, since even obviously evil things can be allowed in order to bring God’s plans about.

Prayer:
Father, I trust You that Your will will be done on earth, at least in the end. Help me not to be anxious about the evil that I see in the world. I know that it is being allowed for reasons that I don’t fully understand, but so that ultimately Your purposes will be fulfilled.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 363 – Revelation 10-14

Scripture:
““If anyone is to go into captivity,
into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.”

This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people.” ~Revelation 13:10

Observation:
This verse reinforces something that we all know. We are not in charge. If God’s will is for something to happen, it will happen. There’s nothing we can do about that.

Application:
I need to show patience and endurance in my trials. God’s purposes are the one’s that will prevail and anything that happens to me is in line with what God is doing. This is hard to accept sometimes, but true.

Prayer:
Father, sometimes it is hard to trust that truly everything is under Your control. The world seems like it is headed the wrong way. Help me to patiently endure and stand firm, especially when I don’t understand the big picture.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 362 – Revelation 5-9

Scripture:
“After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.” ~Revelation 7:9

Observation:
These are the believers killed in the great tribulation. They come from every people group, meaning that at the time this happens, there are Christians from every tribe and nation on earth.

Application:
I want to do my part to bring others to Christ. I’ll probably never reach a whole country, but I can reach some people.

Prayer:
Father, help me to reach those that I supposed to be reaching in my town. Perhaps I will never reach thousands, but I do want to be faithful in what you’ve called me to. Enlarge my leadership as I do my best to reach others.

Scripture:
“Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.” ~Revelation 2:5

Observation:
Jesus is speaking to the Ephesian church and is telling them that if they do not repent, He is going to take from them the light they have to draw others. In effect, they will lose the power of their witness.

Application:
What things are hindering my witness that I need to repent of?

Prayer:
Father, I turn away again from those things that are in my that are not of You. Brighten my light to the world so that others might see it and turn to You. Help me to avoid temptation and deliver me from evil.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 260 – Ezekiel 42-44, Revelation 22

Scripture:
“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” ~Revelation 22:12-13

Observation:
This makes me wonder what God’s definition of “soon” is. It’s been almost 2,000 years since John wrote down these visions and the events described have not literally come to pass yet. I believe them to be an accurate description of what will happen, but when is not known to us. Also, Christ’s reward for our deeds does not imply salvation by works, merely that there is a reward for good works.

Application:
I am impatient and I want to know the mysteries of God and when all these things will happen. God, though, isn’t on my timeframe and has His own purposes that will be fulfilled before all this happens. My job is to trust Him and do my best to follow His commands, so that I might earn the reward He has for me.

Prayer:
Father, I’m not always good at being patient and I don’t like not knowing things. Help me to learn the lessons that You would have me learn and to not worry about when these things will happen. Let me be worried about earning my reward, not about when the “end” will come. You had the wisdom and power to start everything and You have the wisdom to bring it to an end in Your timing. Help me to be obedient with whatever time I have left.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 259 – Ezekiel 40-41, Psalm 128, Revelation 21

Scripture:
“Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
who walk in obedience to him.
You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings and prosperity will be yours.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
around your table.
Yes, this will be the blessing
for the man who fears the Lord.” ~Psalm 128:1-4

Observation:
The Old Testament particularly advances the idea that those who fear God will be blessed in certain ways while still on earth.

Application:
Does this still apply? Does God still offer earthly blessing for those who fear Him? What does it mean to fear Him? Does it mean to actually be afraid of Him or is it more of a deep and profound respect? I am going to read up on what it means to fear God.

Prayer:
Father, Your word promises blessings for those who “fear” You, but I don’t think I completely understand what that means. Please speak to me as I try to learn what this means, but more than that, give me the “fear” that You want me to have through Your Spirit. I want this family blessing very much and ask that You impress on me how to obtain it.

Scripture:
“The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.

The Lord is good to all;
he has compassion on all he has made.” ~Psalm 145:8-9

Observation:
God is good to everyone he has created, even those who reject Him. Despite this rejection, He withholds His anger for a time and loves enough to try and reconcile everyone to Him.

Application:
God was and is patient with me. He has given me many blessings, even when I sin against Him.

Prayer:
Father, You are rich in love and slow to anger. You are compassionate to everyone You have created, even those who don’t deserve it. Even when I don’t deserve it. Never let me forget how deep Your love is and help me to have the same attitude of compassion and patience with others, even those who are against You.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 257 – Ezekiel 36-37, Psalm 110, Revelation 19

July 15, 2013 in Podcasts

Scripture:
“Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.'”

Observation:
God is telling the Israelites in exile about returning them to their land, but He does not do so primarily for their benefit. He is doing it in order that His Name might be glorified.

Application:
If much of the grace that God has shown me is not even for my benefit (even though it does benefit me) then I am missing much of the point when I fail to live for God’s purposes. God’s actions are for His own glory, not mine. I am just fortunate that God shows His glory through His mercy.

Prayer:
Father, this is a hard idea to grasp, that while the grace You have shown me is for my benefit and because of Your love, it is also not just or even primarily for my benefit. I don’t pretend to understand, but You are God and You have a claim to everything You have created. Thank You that Your love leads to grace and redemption. I will try to make my life more and more about You and not miss the point so much.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 256 – Ezekiel 33-35, Revelation 18

July 14, 2013 in Podcasts

Play

Scripture:
“‘But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.'” ~Ezekiel 33:6

Observation:
God is speaking to Ezekiel, telling him that if he doesn’t warn the people, their blood will be on his hands. While I don’t believe this to be true regarding Christians and our attempts (or not) to warn and convert our neighbors, I still suspect that there could be some sorrow over opportunities missed.

Application:
I don’t want to come to the end of my life and be confronted with the people that I could have helped repent but didn’t. Even though I don’t think I’ll be held accountable for those people, I still don’t want to see that happen.

Prayer:
Father, help me to feel a sense of urgency about Your service and my part in it. I don’t want to miss opportunities to lead others to repentance. Help me to make the most of my time and not waste it chasing after things that aren’t as important as the souls of those around me.
