Daily Bible Podcast Day 331 – Psalm 125, Matthew 26-27

Scripture:
“After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, ‘Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.’

Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, ‘I don’t know the man!’

Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: ‘Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly.” ~Matthew 26:73-75

Observation:
Just as Jesus had predicted, Peter disowns Jesus in public. Despite this, Jesus ultimately doesn’t hold it against him, and Peter goes on to be a great leader in the early church.

Application:
I have disowned Jesus, not with words, but with actions; by failing to do what Jesus would have had me do. I have also failed to acknowledge Him when I should have.

Prayer:
Father, like Peter, I have “disowned” Jesus. I know that You don’t hold that against me any more than You held it against Peter. Empower me to complete my mission as You empowered him. Help me to be more faithful in the future than I have been in the past and I will do my best to acknowledge Jesus when given the chance.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 282 – Nehemiah 1-2, Psalm 133, Luke 22

Scripture:
“‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.'” ~Luke 22:42

Observation:
Jesus knows what’s coming. He’s facing a slow, painful death on a cross, after He’s tortured for hours prior. It’s His choice. He even asks for a different way, but ultimately He submits. Jesus does God’s will no matter what.

Application:
I need to make this a regular prayer in my life as a reminder of what I’m supposed to be working toward. “Not my will, but Yours be done.”

Prayer:
Father, as long as I’m on earth, I won’t have Jesus’ faith. Even so, I want to do Your will, not mine, so help me to be obedient as Jesus was. I’ll probably never go to a cross, but I’d like to think that I’d be willing. Increase my faith and obedience.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 129 – 2 Samuel 17, Psalm 71, Matthew 26

Scripture:
“Do not be far from me, my God;
come quickly, God, to help me.
May my accusers perish in shame;
may those who want to harm me
be covered with scorn and disgrace.

As for me, I will always have hope;
I will praise you more and more.

My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds,
of your saving acts all day long—
though I know not how to relate them all.” ~Psalm 71:12-15

Observation:
David’s accusers are those trying to remove him from power. They are people who oppose his kingship over Israel.

Application:
My only accuser (that I know of) is Satan. He doesn’t oppose me in a political sense, but he does want to see that God’s power doesn’t have an effect in my life.

Prayer:
God, come quickly to save me from my accuser. Help me to resist him and always keep Your praise in my words. Like David, I don’t know how to tell the things you have done, but I will do my best. I hope in you, God, help me.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 022 – Exodus 3-5, Luke 22

Scripture:
“A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.'” ~ Luke 22:24-26

Observation:
Jesus is telling his followers not to exercise authority the way the rulers of the Gentiles do. Anyone who wants to be great in God Kingdom should serve others. I wonder if Jesus would caution us today against things like running for office.

Application:
I have roles in my life where I am certainly tempted to use my authority to boss others around to follow my agenda. Jesus would say I need to serve those people, but my own mind says that would undermine me. I need to better serve my wife and friends as well.

Prayer:
God, show me the opportunities to serve others and give me the courage to follow through. Let me remember that even if serving might undermine some earthly authority that I have, I shouldn’t be worried about my clout, but Yours.
