Scripture:
“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” ~John 14:13-14

Observation:
Jesus is preparing His disciples for His departure.

Application:
Anything asked in Jesus name and according to God’s purposes will be granted.

Prayer:
Father, in Jesus’ name I ask that You help me to resist temptation and the schemes of the evil one. I also ask that You make me an effective worker in Your harvest field. I know that You have a purpose for me; show it to me.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 355 – John 9-11

Scripture:
“He replied, ‘Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!'” ~John 9:25

Observation:
The man blind from birth has been healed by Jesus. The Pharisees are questioning him about what happened and claiming that Jesus is a sinner. The formerly blind man offers the only witness he can.

Application:
Sometimes I hesistate to share the Good news because I worry that I don’t know well enough how to talk about it. However, I can always do what the unblinded man did and tell others what Jesus has done for me.

Prayer:
Father, help me to, at the very least, share what You have done for me through Jesus. I want to be a witness for You, so help me to know how I need to change my routine to be in contact with those who need to hear Your message. Then, may I simply share what Jesus has done.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 354 – John 7-8

Scripture:
“’Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.’” ~John 7:48-49

Observation:
The teachers of the law are arrogant in their knowledge. They are the most educated people in their society. They have their entire Bible memorized and think they know enough to judge correctly. Yet, in their pride, they turn out to be blind. They hear Jesus’ words, but are too “smart” and proud to listen and obey.

Application:
I place great value on being intelligent, well-read, and knowledgeable. I must be careful that, like the Pharisees, I don’t equate those things with spiritual wisdom. That I don’t become proud or conceited, but that I listen and obey.

Prayer:
Father, I don’t want to just be someone who knows a lot about Jesus. I want to be someone who follows Jesus. Show me opportunities to follow Him and I will do my best to obey. I will try to not value knowledge above obedience, so that I will be a doer of the Word, not just a hearer.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 353 – John 5-6

Scripture:
“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” ~John 5:24

Observation:
Jesus is speaking about the source of His message and authority.

Application:
Belief is the source of salvation. I worry that my sins might disqualify me from reconciliation, but Jesus and Paul assure us that salvation is through faith, not works.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the assurance here and Jesus that judgment is avoided through faith. I didn’t do anything and couldn’t do anything to deserve this. Help me have assurance of my eternal destiny, but also work in me to remove the last traces of sin from my life. I want to bear fruit and so live up to what You have called me to. Help me to know what form that calling is to take.

Scripture:
“He must become greater; I must become less.” ~John 3:30

Observation:
Some of John the Baptist’s disciples have come to him telling him about how Jesus is attracting everyone. They seem concerned that John is losing followers. John is happy that he had a part to play and that Jesus is getting the attention.

Application:
Just like John, my agenda, my desires, my esteem, my wishes must decrease in importance in my own life as compared with the will of God. I must consider myself less important and Him more important.

Prayer:
Father, help me to look less to my own wants and more to Yours. Help me to think less of myself and more of You. Help me to care less and less about what happens to me and more and more about what You can do through me.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 351 – 2 Peter 1-3, John 1

Scripture:
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” ~2 Peter 3:9

Observation:
This verse takes the common complaint that God seems slow to fulfill His promise and flips it on its head by reminding us that He is also “slow” to condemn us. Thank God!

Application:
There are things that I wish God would just go ahead and get on with. This verse is reminder that God works in His own time, often for our benefit and the benefit of others who need to repent, even when we don’t see it.

Prayer:
Father, thank You that, in Your “slowness”, You chose not to condemn me for my sin. Help me to remain patient while You fulfill Your promises in Your time. Help me to work diligently in the meantime so that I might have a part in the repentance of others for whom you are also withholding Your judgment, and thank You for my own repentance (daily!) and redemption.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 231 – Jeremiah 45-47, Psalm 105, John 21

Scripture:
“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations what he has done.
Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts.
Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
Look to the Lord and his strength;
seek his face always.” ~Psalm 105:1-4

Observation:
The Psalmist encourages us to sing and give praise to God and to seek His face always. The remainder of the Psalm recounts God’s covenants and His acts of faithfulness to Israel.

Application:
Am I “making known among the nations” what God has done? In my weakness, do I look to the Lord and His strength?

Prayer:
Father God, this Psalm is a reminder to me to make my worship not just something that happens during a church service. I will try to do a better job of seeking Your face during the week and relying on Your strength.

Scripture:
“Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)” ~John 20:8-9

Observation:
Despite having spent every waking moment for several years with Jesus and knowing the Old Testament extremely well, the disciples still did not understand that Jesus would rise from the dead.

Application:
I don’t always understand what’s going on in my life either and I don’t know the Bible or Jesus nearly as well as the disciples. I will keep doing what I can to learn, but I probably don’t need to feel too bad, since the disciples didn’t always understand either.

Prayer:
Father, there’s so much about my life and the spiritual world that I don’t understand. Give me faith to keep trusting and let me acquire wisdom through study and the Holy Spirit so that I’ll understand more and more. Let me also share that with others as I come to understand more and more, that in everything Jesus will be glorified.
