Scripture:
“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” ~John 14:13-14

Observation:
Jesus is preparing His disciples for His departure.

Application:
Anything asked in Jesus name and according to God’s purposes will be granted.

Prayer:
Father, in Jesus’ name I ask that You help me to resist temptation and the schemes of the evil one. I also ask that You make me an effective worker in Your harvest field. I know that You have a purpose for me; show it to me.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 331 – Psalm 125, Matthew 26-27

Scripture:
“After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, ‘Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.’

Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, ‘I don’t know the man!’

Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: ‘Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly.” ~Matthew 26:73-75

Observation:
Just as Jesus had predicted, Peter disowns Jesus in public. Despite this, Jesus ultimately doesn’t hold it against him, and Peter goes on to be a great leader in the early church.

Application:
I have disowned Jesus, not with words, but with actions; by failing to do what Jesus would have had me do. I have also failed to acknowledge Him when I should have.

Prayer:
Father, like Peter, I have “disowned” Jesus. I know that You don’t hold that against me any more than You held it against Peter. Empower me to complete my mission as You empowered him. Help me to be more faithful in the future than I have been in the past and I will do my best to acknowledge Jesus when given the chance.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 307 – Job 25, Mark 13-14

Scripture:
“‘But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.'” ~Mark 13:32-33

Observation:
Jesus is telling the disciples about the Second Coming. He stresses several times that no one knows when this will happen, but many will be deceived by those claiming to know.

Application:
Am I living my life as if Jesus could come back any moment? Who do I know that is not prepared for that to happen? Do I have a sense of urgency about reaching these people?

Prayer:
Jesus, Your disciples clearly had a sense of urgency about Your return. They wanted as many as possible to be ready for You. Give me their same view. Help me to remember and live in a way that acknowledges that You could come back at any moment. Help me to fill up name cards at Your banquet table.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 223 – Jeremiah 7-9, John 13

Scripture:
“‘Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.'” ~John 13:17

Observation:
Knowing things is not enough. Blessing comes from action, not just knowledge.

Application:
I have a tendency to learn things without necessarily putting them into action. I know lots and lots of Biblical facts. I don’t always do such a good job of applying what I know.

Prayer:
Father, I don’t just want to be someone who hears or reads Your word. I don’t want to only be a knower. I want to be a doer. Please give me a bias toward action in all areas of my life. Help me to turn the things I know into the things I do and in so doing, gain blessing.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 129 – 2 Samuel 17, Psalm 71, Matthew 26

Scripture:
“Do not be far from me, my God;
come quickly, God, to help me.
May my accusers perish in shame;
may those who want to harm me
be covered with scorn and disgrace.

As for me, I will always have hope;
I will praise you more and more.

My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds,
of your saving acts all day long—
though I know not how to relate them all.” ~Psalm 71:12-15

Observation:
David’s accusers are those trying to remove him from power. They are people who oppose his kingship over Israel.

Application:
My only accuser (that I know of) is Satan. He doesn’t oppose me in a political sense, but he does want to see that God’s power doesn’t have an effect in my life.

Prayer:
God, come quickly to save me from my accuser. Help me to resist him and always keep Your praise in my words. Like David, I don’t know how to tell the things you have done, but I will do my best. I hope in you, God, help me.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 066 – Deuteronomy 5-6, Psalm 43, Mark 14

Scripture:
“‘Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.'” ~Mark 14:38

Observation:
Jesus has asked the disciples to keep watch while he goes off to pray. Each time, they fall asleep. It isn’t that they don’t want to be obedient, it’s that their bodies betray them. They are exhausted, so they are unable to do as Jesus asks.

Application:
I know that my flesh is likely to lead me into temptation. Like the disciples, when I am tired I am more likely to not do things I should. I know that my church needs my talents, but when I am tired, I am less likely to give them.

Prayer:
Father, help me to minimize those things in my life that make me unnecessarily tired. I don’t want to miss opportunities to serve and bless others because I am tired from something that perhaps is less important to Your kingdom. Help me to know which activities deserve my energy and which don’t.
