Scripture:
“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” ~John 14:13-14

Observation:
Jesus is preparing His disciples for His departure.

Application:
Anything asked in Jesus name and according to God’s purposes will be granted.

Prayer:
Father, in Jesus’ name I ask that You help me to resist temptation and the schemes of the evil one. I also ask that You make me an effective worker in Your harvest field. I know that You have a purpose for me; show it to me.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 327 – Matthew 14-16

Scripture:
“You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’” ~Matthew 15:7-9

Observation:
Jesus certainly does not seem to be a fan of the religious leaders and this exchange is no different. They have come to challenge Jesus about tradition, but Jesus lets them have it about breaking the commands of God for the sake of that tradition.

Application:
While I would like to think that I am better that the Pharisees, are there places where I am disobeying a command of God’s because of a tradition? Is my heart from God while my mouth honors Him.

Prayer:
Father, I know that tradition isn’t always bad, but can become so if merely repeated without examination. Help me to examine what I do, so that I won’t fall into forsaking Your commands for the sake of “how things have always been done.” Much of the church, and my job in the church, is surrounded with tradition. Help me to know what is contrary to Your will and give me the courage to effectively and lovingly oppose both it and those who would elevate it above Your commands.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 304 – Job 22, Mark 7-8

Scripture:
“He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.'” ~Mark 7:20-23

Observation:
Jesus is telling the people that ceremonial hand-washing or eating only kosher food doesn’t prevent them from being defiled. It isn’t what we consume that defiles us, it’s what we produce as are result of our hearts.

Application:
It isn’t a certain type of music or the wrong books or the wrong food or any of that stuff that produces sin in my life. It’s my heart. Certainly negative inputs can impact my heart, but they aren’t what causes those things to manifest in my actions.

Prayer:
Father, if my heart is where sin comes from, change my heart. If my heart is where all those things reside, rip them out. Help me to continue putting good things into my heart to counteract the evil already there, but do what only You can do and give me a new heart.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 269 – Ezra 4, Psalm 113, 127, Luke 9

Scripture:
“Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves.” ~Psalm 127:1-2

Observation:
The Psalm is telling us that God is in charge and that nothing we do ultimately stands against His wishes.

Application:
I spend a lot of time planning my future. There are things right now that I am worried about. Ultimately, though, what will happen is in God’s hands. It doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t plan or work, just that I should worry and obsess about what I have little control over.

Prayer:
Father, You know my desires for my family’s future. I pray that You will bring my plans in line with Yours. Make Your will clear to me and help me to follow it. Give me a heart of peace about the future, and help me remember that worry can’t add a single day to my life.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 222 – Jeremiah 5-6, John 12

Scripture:
“If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.” ~John 12:47-48

Observation:
Jesus is saying that the person who accepts Him will not be judged. Only those who reject Him will.

Application:
When I think about the sin that I still have in my life, I sometimes worry that this might mean that I’m still under judgment. Jesus says here that only those who reject Him are under judgment.

Prayer:
Jesus, I want to rededicate myself to Your words. I accept You and Your teaching; please help me to do a better job following Your will. Thank You that even my failings don’t bring me under judgment.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 119 – 2 Samuel 4-5, Psalm 139, Matthew 16

Scripture:
“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?'” ~Matthew 16:24-26

Observation:
This verse comes right after Peter’s trying to deny that Jesus would be crucified and Jesus’ famous “Get thee behind me, Satan” reply to him. God’s plan often runs counter to what makes sense to us. Jesus is clearly insistent that any denial of the crucifixion is of Satan.

Application:
I don’t know how often I do a good job of denying myself and taking up my cross. I’m not even sure what my cross is. There are circumstances where it’s more obvious what the sacrificial choice is, but not often enough for me to feel confident.

Prayer:
Father, help me to know better how to deny myself and follow Jesus. I will do my best to take up my cross, I just want to know what my cross is only a daily basis.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 060 – Numbers 28-29, Mark 8

December 30, 2012 in Podcasts

Scripture:
“Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.’” ~Mark 8:34-38

Observation:
Jesus is really challenging at times. This is one of them. He requires that anyone who wants to follow Him be willing to give up their earthly life in exchange for an eternal one. Losing one’s life can take many forms, from giving up desires of the flesh to actually being willing to die in a place where being a disciple could get you killed.

Application:
What kind of “death” am I supposed to die? Certainly I should be willing to give up my own wants and subjugate them to Jesus’ desires. I don’t know what all of the consequences of that might be, and that makes it hard to do.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, help me to give up what I want and be willing to do what the Son wants. It’s really difficult to die to myself. I need Your help or it will never happen. Help me be willing.
