Scripture:
“‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.'” ~Luke 22:42

Observation:
Jesus knows what’s coming. He’s facing a slow, painful death on a cross, after He’s tortured for hours prior. It’s His choice. He even asks for a different way, but ultimately He submits. Jesus does God’s will no matter what.

Application:
I need to make this a regular prayer in my life as a reminder of what I’m supposed to be working toward. “Not my will, but Yours be done.”

Prayer:
Father, as long as I’m on earth, I won’t have Jesus’ faith. Even so, I want to do Your will, not mine, so help me to be obedient as Jesus was. I’ll probably never go to a cross, but I’d like to think that I’d be willing. Increase my faith and obedience.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 023 – Exodus 6-8, Luke 23

Scripture:
“But Moses said to the Lord, ‘If the Israelites will not listen to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips?’” ~Exodus 6:12

Observation:
Moses, despite having been chosen directly by God, is insecure. He fears he will be ineffective because he’s not eloquent enough to square off against Pharaoh. The notes in my study Bible suggest Moses is just making excuses.

Application:
I almost didn’t do this podcast. I don’t like the sound of my speaking voice and I was afraid that others might not like it either. Am I smart enough or eloquent enough to handle everything that God might want me to do in my life? No. If I were a genius or exceptionally gifted, people might look at any good deeds I do and attribute them to me. God prefers to use weak people; that way He gets the credit. I decided to do this podcast anyway and let God’s purposes be fulfilled. Whatever they are.

Prayer:
God, use me to do something I could never do alone. Do something that when people look at me they say, “only God could have done that.” Just help me to be faithful in what you have for me to accomplish.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 022 – Exodus 3-5, Luke 22

Scripture:
“A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.'” ~ Luke 22:24-26

Observation:
Jesus is telling his followers not to exercise authority the way the rulers of the Gentiles do. Anyone who wants to be great in God Kingdom should serve others. I wonder if Jesus would caution us today against things like running for office.

Application:
I have roles in my life where I am certainly tempted to use my authority to boss others around to follow my agenda. Jesus would say I need to serve those people, but my own mind says that would undermine me. I need to better serve my wife and friends as well.

Prayer:
God, show me the opportunities to serve others and give me the courage to follow through. Let me remember that even if serving might undermine some earthly authority that I have, I shouldn’t be worried about my clout, but Yours.
