Daily Bible Podcast Day 011 – Genesis 27 and 28, Psalm 4, Luke 11

Scripture:
“He said to them, ‘When you pray, say:
‘Father,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.’’” ~Luke 11:2-4

Observation:
This is Luke’s recording of what we call The Lord’s Prayer. It breaks down to recognizing God’s holiness, praying for His will on earth, praying for our daily needs, asking for forgiveness and giving it, and asking for deliverance from temptation.

Application:
Since this is the way Jesus told his disciples to pray, I will work it into my own prayer time more often. Why not start now?

Prayer:
God, you’re the only one worthy of my prayers and I ask for your will to be done. Not my will or the will of anyone else. Yours. Give me what I need when I need it and help me remember that You have Your reasons for granting some requests of mine and not granting others. Forgive me of my own shortcomings when I forgive others their’s. Help me avoid the things in my life that would lead me down the wrong path.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 009 – Genesis 23 and 24, Luke 9

Scripture:
“Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?'” ~Luke 9:23-25

Observation:
Jesus is speaking here to his disciples, who don’t know that he’s going to the cross yet. It must seem strange to them to have Jesus talking about them being willing to be executed as criminals. Their understanding of the Messiah is of a King who would politically save His people.

Application:
I don’t know if I’m prepared to take up a cross. I’m not exactly sure what my cross might be; it’s one of the reasons I’m doing this. To learn what God wants from me. It is really hard to accept that it might be something very difficult. Maybe it won’t require my life, but what if it does? What good are all my other pursuits if I lose my soul in the process.

Prayer:
Father, I don’t know how ready I am to carry a cross. I’d like to say that I’m prepared to do anything You ask, but I don’t think that’s true yet. Right now I like my life too much. Help me to see what I’m supposed to do. I’ll try to do my best with what you show me.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 008 – Genesis 20-22, Luke 8

Day 8
Scripture:
“Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.’ When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.” Genesis 22:2, 9-10

Observation:
Abraham is asked by God to do something amazingly difficult and completely inexplicable. He is asked to sacrifice the son he waited for until he was an old man. The verse doesn’t tell us Abraham’s mental state, but I can’t imagine that he wasn’t tormented. I don’t think I could have obeyed in this instance. But Abraham does. He is willing to give up anything in obedience to God.

Application:
I want to obey God’s will. At least most of the time I do. Am I willing to give up the things that dominate my time and energy in order to be obedient? Probably not always. I need to be aware of the things I might place ahead of God in importance and at least try to be willing to let go of a little control.

Prayer:
God, what are the things that You want me to give up in order to demonstrate my willingness to be obedient? Or, what are the things that You might not even want me to give up, just be willing to give up? Show me the things that are most important to me and help me surrender control to You.
