Daily Bible Podcast Day 334 – Romans 1-4

September 30, 2013 in Podcasts

Scripture:
“What does Scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.’

The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.” ~Romans 4:3, 23-24

Observation:
The point Paul is making is that righteousness is given as a result of believing God. It is not due us as a result of anything we earn or deserve.

Application:
Is this the message that I convey? Do I remember this in my moments of doubt?

Prayer:
Father, help me to remember that I am righteous, despite my sin, because of my belief in Jesus and His death and resurrection. May this be the message that I preach; that righteousness is available to all who believe, that I might do what I can to see that fewer people perish.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 333 – 1 Thessalonians 4-5, 2 Thessalonians 1-3

Scripture:
“With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” ~2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

Observation:
I don’t feel like there’s anything I could say to do justice to what Paul, Timothy, and Silas have to say to the church in Thessalonica.

Application:
This would be my prayer for myself.

Prayer:
Father, all I can ask is that You grant me the request that Paul, Timothy, and Silas made on behalf of their brothers and sisters in Thessalonica.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 332 – Matthew 28, 1 Thessalonians 1-3

Scripture:
“We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition. For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.” ~1 Thessalonians 2:2-4

Observation:
Paul, Silas, and Timothy write that they have been mistreated for the Gospel but that they don’t preach to please people. They are willing to face suffering on earth because they are looking forward to a heavenly reward.

Application:
It’s unlikely that I’ll face the same kind of physical danger that the apostles faced for the Gospel, but am I even willing to endure ostracism or social persecution?

Prayer:
Father, give me the boldness that the apostles had so that I can do Your will no matter the earthly consequences. Help me to seek only Your approval, because I do want to please You, even I am sometimes distracted or worried about what others think. You have entrusted me with the Gospel as well, may I prove myself worthy.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 331 – Psalm 125, Matthew 26-27

Scripture:
“After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, ‘Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.’

Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, ‘I don’t know the man!’

Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: ‘Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly.” ~Matthew 26:73-75

Observation:
Just as Jesus had predicted, Peter disowns Jesus in public. Despite this, Jesus ultimately doesn’t hold it against him, and Peter goes on to be a great leader in the early church.

Application:
I have disowned Jesus, not with words, but with actions; by failing to do what Jesus would have had me do. I have also failed to acknowledge Him when I should have.

Prayer:
Father, like Peter, I have “disowned” Jesus. I know that You don’t hold that against me any more than You held it against Peter. Empower me to complete my mission as You empowered him. Help me to be more faithful in the future than I have been in the past and I will do my best to acknowledge Jesus when given the chance.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 330 – Matthew 23-25

Scripture:
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” ~Matthew 23:27-28

Observation:
Jesus is calling out the Pharisees and teachers of the law for looking good on the outside but harboring sin on the inside.

Application:
Sometimes I feel like a Pharisee. My public life looks pretty good, but my inside life isn’t always.

Prayer:
Father, help me to bring my private and public lives into congruence. I confess that I am not always the man that others see. Root out my sin and help me to become righteous in Your sight.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 329 – Matthew 20-22

Scripture:
” Jesus replied, ‘You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.'” ~Matthew 22:29

Observation:
Jesus is correcting the Sadducees, who believe there is no resurrection. Jesus is explaining to them why they are wrong. They are wrong because they don’t know God’s Word or His power. I suspect that all error might be because of these knowledge gaps.

Application:
I am currently studying so that I’ll better know God’s Word, but I also need to pray for the knowledge of God’s power. I don’t want to be in error because I don’t know these things.

Prayer:
Father, I am learning the scriptures to better understand You and Your will. Help me also to learn of and experience Your power. I don’t want to be caught in a position where I am in error because of my lack of knowledge. Help me to learn what I need to know, but mostly help me to do what I need to do.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 328 – Matthew 17-19

Scripture:
“Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” ~Matthew 18:32-35

Observation:
As in the Lord’s Prayer, we are forgiven as we forgive.

Application:
I don’t think that I am harboring resentment toward anyone, but I will be on the lookout for anyone that I haven’t forgiven but need to.

Prayer:
Father, I don’t want to miss out on anything that You have for me as a result of failing to forgive. Help me to know if there is anyone I need to offer forgiveness. I have the willingness, help me to know if there is anyone. Thank You for Your extension of mercy to my debt; I will do my best to extend the same to others.

Daily Bible Podcast Day 327 – Matthew 14-16

Scripture:
“You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’” ~Matthew 15:7-9

Observation:
Jesus certainly does not seem to be a fan of the religious leaders and this exchange is no different. They have come to challenge Jesus about tradition, but Jesus lets them have it about breaking the commands of God for the sake of that tradition.

Application:
While I would like to think that I am better that the Pharisees, are there places where I am disobeying a command of God’s because of a tradition? Is my heart from God while my mouth honors Him.

Prayer:
Father, I know that tradition isn’t always bad, but can become so if merely repeated without examination. Help me to examine what I do, so that I won’t fall into forsaking Your commands for the sake of “how things have always been done.” Much of the church, and my job in the church, is surrounded with tradition. Help me to know what is contrary to Your will and give me the courage to effectively and lovingly oppose both it and those who would elevate it above Your commands.

Scripture:
“‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.'” ~Matthew 13:44

Observation:
The kingdom of heaven is portrayed as being an exceedingly valuable thing. So valuable that a man would give up everything he had in order to acquire it.

Application:
Do I believe that the kingdom of heaven is worthy giving up everything for? Am I really prepared to do that?

Prayer:
Father, Jesus tells us that Your kingdom is incredibly valuable; worth giving up everything for. I want to inherit Your kingdom, but I am hesitant to give up everything. Help me to be willing to let go of what You want me to. I will do my best to put You first.

Scripture:
“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.'” ~Matthew 9:37-38

Observation:
Jesus remarks that there are many who are receptive to the Gospel, but that there is a shortage of those to share the message. I’m sure the same is still true today.

Application:
Am I active in my local “harvest field”? How can I become more active and how can I recruit others into the work of the harvest?

Prayer:
Father, help me to become a better harvest worker. Show me opportunities and help me to be obedient. Your great desire is for people to come to repentance and faith in Christ. Make that my desire as well.
