Scripture:
“Now I decree that any of the Israelites in my kingdom, including priests and Levites, who volunteer to go to Jerusalem with you, may go. You are sent by the king and his seven advisers to inquire about Judah and Jerusalem with regard to the Law of your God, which is in your hand. Moreover, you are to take with you the silver and gold that the king and his advisers have freely given to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, together with all the silver and gold you may obtain from the province of Babylon, as well as the freewill offerings of the people and priests for the temple of their God in Jerusalem.” ~Ezra 7:13-16

Observation:
King Artaxerxes of Babylon issues this decree for the Jews to be able to return to Jerusalem to begin worshiping there again. The Jews for many years had been captive in Babylon, sent there by God for their disobedience. God then uses their captor to bless them. Despite what seems to be a bad situation, God makes good come from it.

Application:
I’m not a captive in a far away country, but there are certainly bad things in my life. Things that don’t seem to be in any way positive for me. But, as King Artaxerxes shows, God can use even our bad circumstances in order to bless us.

Prayer:
Father, I would not have chosen every circumstance that I am faced with in my life. There are many things that I simply can’t handle on my own. Things that I feel cursed by. I know that You are the one who is really in charge and that good can come out of any negative circumstance. I just have to trust You that I will learn and receive from every trial what it takes for me to become a better man; a man more like Your Son. Please bless me, even in those circumstances that seem to me to be curses.
