Daily Bible Podcast Day 274 – Zechariah 10-12, Psalm 126, Luke 14

“Then Jesus said to his host, ‘When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.'”

In the parable following these verses, Jesus says that this is what God does. He calls everyone to His “banquet”, but it is often not the well-off that respond. Those who are poor and needy do, however. If we are generous toward those who cannot pay us back, Jesus is telling us one way we can act as God does.

This is challenging. I live miles away from any real poverty and it just isn’t something I think about on a regular basis. There are ministries to the homeless and addicted that I need to look into volunteering with.

Father, I don’t often see or think about those who are poor in my city. Give me a heart for those that You have a heart for and keep them present in my mind so that I don’t forget who I should be serving. Give me a generous spirit to carry Jesus to people who may not see Him otherwise.
