Scripture:
“In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.’

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.'” ~Luke 1:26-30

Observation:
Mary is greeted by an angel with the words that she is highly favored. Still she is nervous. Even though, or perhaps even because, she seems to know it is God’s messenger talking to her, she is troubled. I wonder if at that moment Mary had an idea that the plans she had made for her own life were about to be completely changed. She took it better than I would have. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” (v. 38)

Application:
While God isn’t likely to make His plan for my life known to me in as direct a way as He did for Mary, that doesn’t absolve me of responsibility to obey. God’s will is contained in His word and like Mary, I am often nervous that God’s call will result in the changing of my plans. Perhaps a good prayer to pray is an echo of Mary’s submission.

Prayer:
Father, I have to admit that I often worry that following Jesus will result in the change of my plans. I even “know” that Your plan is better than mine, but still I struggle. Help me to have Mary’s attitude and simply say, “I am the Lord’s servant, may Your word to me be fulfilled.”
