Scripture:
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.'” ~Lamentations 3:22-24

Observation:
The Lamenter (as it were) is experiencing unspeakable hardship. He has seen his people destroyed and those left behind are starving. Yet, what does he do here? He acknowledges God’s goodness and faithfulness. Even though he is likely hungry, he says that God is his “portion” and that he will wait for Him. The Bible certainly operates from the idea that all people are deserving of God’s wrath, so that the amazing restraint, love, and forgiveness that God shows is amazing.

Application:
I have only a little experience with hardship. That I have experienced I can’t say that I was very good about God being my portion or that I waited patiently for Him. I have, however, been angry with God even though, “he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone,” (v. 33) and the fact that God doesn’t owe me anything.

Prayer:
God, I know that You don’t owe me anything, but I’m still upset about some of the things that have happened. Show compassion and healing if You will, but either way help me to rely on You and find You to be enough for all my worries and needs.
