Scripture:
“Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
it is not for them to direct their steps.
Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—
not in your anger,
or you will reduce me to nothing.” ~Jeremiah 10:23-24

Observation:
Jeremiah is praying when he states this. I wonder if “it is not for them to direct their steps” means that they can’t or that they shouldn’t. Jeremiah also asks God for discipline.

Application:
Whatever the exact literal meaning of this passage, I know that it is not a good idea that I try to run my own life. I need to accept God’s discipline, even when it is not pleasant, as one way of experiencing His discipline.

Prayer:
Father, discipline sounds like a hard word. I’m not a naturally disciplined person. Please give me guardrails so that I will stay on the straight and narrow. I’m so likely to stray on my own.
