Scripture:
“‘The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.'” ~John 10:17-18

Observation:
Jesus is speaking. He is forecasting His death and explaining that it is completely His decision to give up His life. It will not be taken from Him, He will give it up. His authority extends over life and death and it is His choice. Elsewhere, we are asked to give up our lives as well to follow Jesus. Not necessarily in the sense of dieing, but certainly in giving up our own purposes in exchange for His. This is what obedience to God looks like. Jesus had the power and he chose to follow God’s plan.

Application:
It’s hard to give up my own plan for my life. I don’t always do a good job trusting that God’s plan is better. I don’t always do a good job trusting God in general. Just like Jesus was the only one who could decide He would go to the cross, I am the only one who can decide to surrender my life to His will.

Prayer:
Father, it’s often hard to trust that You have a better plan for me. It’s hard to let go of the things I want. Jesus, give me trust and obedience more like Yours. Sometimes it’s even hard to trust enough to pray that I’d be willing to surrender my life. Help me in all this. I do want to follow Your path.
