Scripture:
“After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, ‘Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.’
Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.” ~John 6:14-15

Observation:
This follows the miracle where Jesus fed the 5,000 with just 5 loaves and 2 fish. Jesus, specifically avoids political power. In fact, his ultimate goal is to become the victim of political power.

Application:
Jesus’ goals are often opposite of what would seem to make sense. Even though He could have made himself King at any point, he refuses to even allow this to happen. Jesus’ kingdom is not a political one. Government is about using force to demand obedience. God, who desires love, knows that true love cannot be coerced. I am susceptible to getting wrapped up in politics. Jesus avoids them because they cannot fulfill His wishes.

Prayer:
Father, so much of Your attitude seems strange to us. Your desire for love from us prevents politics and force from even working to meet your goal of a relationship. A coerced relationship is not a real one. Help me also to see love as the goal and always realize that coercion has no place in the life of someone trying to follow Christ.
