Scripture:
“When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” ~James 1:13-15

Observation:
We are tempted in part because of our nature. We want what we shouldn’t, so in that way temptation is something that comes from within us. Certainly the evil one has a hand in this, but temptation is not passive on our part. The end product of this temptation is death.

Application:
I need to daily be praying for the power of the Holy Spirit to deliver me from temptations of all kinds. I must recognize that temptations are part of my old self that I am supposed to be throwing off as a result of my growth as a Christ-follower. My temptations are from within me and from the work of Satan, so I must be asking for rescue from that.

Prayer:
Father, I’m not always very good at resisting temptation, but I know that Your Spirit is supposed to be able to help me with that. I ask again for the power of the Holy Spirit to daily deliver me from all my temptations. All good gifts come from You and I’m asking for this one now. Show me what I need to do and help me to do it. I do not want to be a slave to temptation and sin.
