Scripture:
“Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so.” ~Hebrews 61-3

Observation:
The writer of Hebrews is saying that we should learn truths beyond the basics. The basics being repentance, faith, laying on of hands, resurrection, and judgment. However, the writer of Hebrews doesn’t yet say what these deeper truths are. The rest of the chapter does speak of hard work and diligence in producing a crop and in helping others.

Application:
There are times when I just wish that the Bible had laid out a complete curriculum for spiritual maturity. Study these things, in this order and you’ll be mature in Christ. It is likely that I am making spiritual maturity more complicated than it actually is; I do that from time to time. It is likely that maturity is related to acting like Jesus while the basics are related to faith and beliefs.

Prayer:
Father, please help me to become mature in Christ. I have the beliefs down. Now help me to become someone who doesn’t just know the truth but also does what is right. Help me to understand the deeper things and not to over-complicate them, if that is what I am doing.
