Scripture:
“Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” ~2 Timothy 4:2-5

Observation:
It seems to me that we live in the time when people listen to those who tell them what they want to hear. What is a US election other than that? Clearly this is not a new phenomenon, which is encouraging. Paul tells Timothy to be prepared for such times and continue to do what is right.

Application:
I must be on my guard that I am not just listening to people who are telling me what I want to hear. I must also be sure that I am not simply telling people what they want to hear. Paul exhorts us to great patience and careful instruction.

Prayer:
Father, patience is not my strongest attribute, especially with those who are listening to “yes men” and following myths. Please protect me from only listening to what I would want to hear and stop me from telling others only what they want to hear. Give me Your patience and instruction, that I might pass it along to others and help me to discharge the duties of my ministry.
