Scripture:
“Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” ~1 Timothy 4:7-8

Observation:
Spiritual training is much better than physical training. The original Olympics were still going at the time of Paul’s writing, so his Greek audience may very well have been sports fans, cheering those with great physical skill.

Application:
Soon I will start training for an athletic event that I plan on participating in. It involves regular workouts and a change to my diet. I am normally not very disciplined when it comes to spiritual training. This Bible reading project that I am doing is the best I have ever done at regular Bible study. I need to think about what kind of spiritual training I’ll be doing once this year is over.

Prayer:
Father, give me the discipline both to train my body and my spirit. Help me to know what good spiritual training consists of and help me to work diligently at it. I want to be in “good shape” in all aspects of this life and the life to come.
