Scripture:
“Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.” ~Philippians 1:12-13

Observation:
Paul spends a long time in prison for no reason other than preaching Christ. He later goes on to say that he will continue to rejoice in what is going on. Paul basically says, and I have heard this elsewhere, that his persecution forces people to take his belief seriously. Anyone willing to suffer as he has will make others curious about why he is willing to suffer.

Application:
Every so often I hear about a missionary being persecuted for attempting to spread the gospel. The proper response is not a prayer to keep that person safe. The proper response is a prayer that Christ will become more famous as a result of whatever it is that happens. One of the ways God shows the world that Christ is to be taken seriously is by using our willingness to suffer for Him.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for not sparing Paul his suffering. Were he not willing to suffer, Christ’s name might not have been taken as seriously. Wherever there are people being persecuted for the name of Jesus, make Him famous. If those brave believers can be freed, please do so, but the spread of the gospel is the most important thing. And if I must suffer, use my suffering for the same purpose.
