Scripture:
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” ~Ephesians 6:4

Observation:
We often think about what instructions the Bible has for children, but here’s one for fathers. Fathers are told not to overly annoy or irritate their children, but instead train and instruct them.

Application:
I find that in my own children, it’s easy for me to assume a level of understanding that they don’t have. I can pretty easily exasperate and get a defiant response from my 4-year-old (the 2-year-old as well) if I don’t take the time to explain the why and how of certain things. The verse is a reminder to train and instruct instead of just ordering them around and making demands. It almost makes me wonder if their responses are less a reflection of their personalities than they are a reflection of how well I am fathering in that moment.

Prayer:
Father, help me to be a good father to my boys. Next to my marriage, they are the earthly thing that I most want to get right. I want them to grow up to be confident men after Your heart. Help me to train and instruct them and not exasperate them. Help me to help them respond appropriately and to bring them up in Your ways. Thank You for them, I can’t imagine my life without them. I pray that I won’t screw them up too badly.
