“And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” ~1 Thessalonians 5:14-18

Paul is saying that the christian should give up on things like idleness and revenge. Instead we should be helping, encouraging, rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks.

There’s a lot here that could potentially apply to me. How often am I idle and what should I be doing instead? Am I encouraging, helpful, patient with everyone? I’m definitely not patient with everyone. Am I striving (a strong verb) to do what is good? How can I rejoice and give thanks more and be more prayerful?

Father, I want to heed Paul’s exhortation to be and do these things. Please help me to do them through Your Spirit. Give me the patience, the encouraging words, the prayerful attitude. Help me to not be idle and to rejoice in everything, even the things that I don’t feel are worth rejoicing over. Mostly help me become more like Jesus in all these ways.
