Scripture:
“‘For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.'” ~1 Thessalonians 1:4-5

Observation:
This is Paul’s introduction to his first letter to the Thessalonian church. Paul knows that God chose the church in Thessalonica because the Gospel came to them with power.

Application:
This is my one area of occasional doubt. Where is the power of the gospel in the modern church? If we are chosen by God, should there be an attendant display of The Spirit’s Power?

Prayer:
Father, where is Your power? As far as I can tell, Your church, at least where I live in the world, is lacking Your power. Please show us where we are falling short of deserving Your power. Your early church grew through the power of Your Spirit. We live in an increasingly apostate and non-Christian culture. Send Your power that we might draw more people to You. Give us also the deep conviction and confidence that the Spirit brings.
