Scripture:
“Jesus called them together and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’” ~Matthew 20:25-28

Observation:
The disciples are basically arguing over who will occupy the places of prestige and power in God’s kingdom. Jesus says that we are not even to desire such things, but that we are to serve others. The believer should not seek power.

Application:
In my heart I often want to be rich and powerful. I want to have other people to cater to my wishes. Jesus says no; I am to serve others, not be served.

Prayer:
Father, it seems natural to want others to do for me. Upend my “natural” desires and give me the heart of a servant. I also pray that You will give Your church and Your followers hearts to serve as well. Let no more believers seek positions of power, not even for the “right” reasons. Give us hearts to serve. Everything You want accomplished can be if we will serve those in need.
