Scripture:
“But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” ~Matthew 15:18-19

Observation:
Jesus is making the pharisees angry again (those who place rules above love). His disciples come asking for clarification. As in Luke, “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”

Application:
Sometimes things come out of my mouth and I know where they come from. Jesus would say, “it came from your heart.” What is coming out of my mouth most often? What is more abundant in my heart? Good things or bad?

Prayer:
Father, I know my heart isn’t completely full of good things. There’s enough bad there that my speech is definitely not what You would desire. Help me to purge my heart of the evil that is there and fill me with an abundance of Your thoughts.
