Scripture:
“‘You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.’”

Observation:
Even though we believe that belief in Christ’s resurrection and his atonement for our sin covers us on judgement day, Jesus says that we will have to give an account for our words.

Application:
This is a little scary. I don’t even remember everything I’ve ever said and I know that I’ve certainly said things that I’d love to take back. My only hope is that Jesus really has forgiven my past and that Jesus’ atonement does erase my transgressions from the “record.”

Prayer:
Father, I know that I still have some mess in my heart and that my words sometimes reflect this. Take any residual evil that I have left and give me a clean, good heart. I repent again of my bad words and ask for forgiveness. Help me to turn away from them.
