Scripture:
“You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.” ~Psalm 63:1

Observation:
David is literally in a desert when he is writing these words. He uses his thirst for water as a parallel to his thirst for God. I wonder how much of David’s longing for God is due to the physical peril he is in.

Application:
My desire for God is not usually as strong as my thirst for water when I am parched. My longings isn’t the same as for a cold glass of water when I’ve been in the sun. My spiritual peril is at least as great as David’s physical peril, so why do I not display the same intensity of need as David?

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, my thirst for God is not often as strong as what David displays in this Psalm. I am thankful that I am not in physical peril, but I often forget that there is spiritual peril as well. Help me to hunger and thirst for righteousness so that I will pursue it more diligently.
