Scripture:
“When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.” ~Matthew 1:24-25

Observation:
Joseph’s first thought is to break off his engagement to Mary, but an angel of the Lord appeared to him and told him to go ahead and marry her, despite the fact that she was pregnant. Joseph hadn’t bargained for this, but he obeyed. The people of Joseph’s time were on Messiah watch, so I wonder about the mixture of emotions he likely felt. Pride that “his” son would be the messiah, perhaps with a twinge of disappointment at not having a “normal” marriage to Mary. But then, who’s marriage is what they expected?

Application:
Am I as willing as Joseph to follow God’s commands? Sometimes I wonder if it would help if the angel of the Lord appeared to me in a dream.

Prayer:
Father, You may not ever send Your angel to speak to me in a dream, but I do have Your Word. With the Holy Spirit’s help, I will do my best to be willing to follow Your instructions, even when what You ask is not what I would have chosen. Your plan is better than mine and I will listen.
