Scripture:
“But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: ‘Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.'” ~1 Samuel 8:6-7

Observation:
Both God and Samuel are upset that the Israelites, instead of looking to God for guidance, are asking for a political ruler instead of a spiritual one.

Application:
I have been known to get caught up in political concerns. I worry that this politician or that one (basically all of them) are leading us to ruin. Whenever I am tempted to hope for political solutions, I need to follow Samuel’s (and God’s) heart and turn to the only true King.

Prayer:
Father, let me not forget that you are the only just and valid ruler and that there are no solutions to human problems apart from Your sovereignty.
