Scripture:
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” ~2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Observation:
The Corinthian church has given generously to those in need and Paul is encouraging them to do so again. The blessing promised is that we will have what we need to do further good. I don’t read this and think that God wants to make me rich for my own purposes, but for His.

Application:
It’s like church and my daily readings are forcing me to confront my hangups about money. I don’t always feel generous and I need to work through this “cheerful giver” stuff. I don’t feel compelled exactly, but I am somewhat reluctant. Is this a case of “fake it ’til you make it?” Do I give now anyway or do I pray for a change of heart? Both?

Prayer:
Father, I don’t want to be reluctant about giving. Please work in my heart so that I will be able to let go of some of my abundance. I know that it isn’t Your only purpose to make me rich, and I’m already so well off compared to many. Help me to become rich in generosity and good works.
