Daily Bible Podcast Day 089 – Judges 8, Psalm 42, 1 Corinthians 15

“No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They set up Baal-Berith as their god and did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.” ~Judges 8:33-34

God interacted more directly with the Israelites than with any other group. Those at Mount Sinai saw His glory; those in this story saw Gideon defeat many thousands with his 300 troops through God’s power. Yet, as soon as Gideon’s leadership is gone, they go right back to sinning.

I’ve often wondered why God doesn’t show Himself more obviously. I mean, wouldn’t more people follow Him if He spoke more directly to us? The case of ancient Israel shows that this is not necessarily the case. Despite direct evidence of God’s power and provision, they always lapse back into sin.

Father, I don’t want to forget what You’ve rescued me from and I don’t want to go back to old ways of being. I want my children to remember you and my grandchildren after I’m gone. Thank You that, even though You the Father aren’t as active now as You were then, that You have given us the Holy Spirit to give us assurance of the reality of our faith. Spirit, assure me again.
