Scripture:
“Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.” ~1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Observation:
Paul adopts the customs and behaviors of whatever group he is trying to reach, so far as he is able to without sinning. He even goes so far as to call himself a slave in this way.

Application:
In what way should I be like the world I live in? Certainly some customs are easy to adopt without sinning. For example, there are those who claim that “secular” music will have an ungodly influence on the believer, but I suspect that music would fall under the heading of “being all things to all people.” There are other customs of the world that I clearly should not adopt, but it is hard to know when things are not so obvious.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, help me to have wisdom in determining how to win as many as possible. Show me the ways that I can “speak the language” of those you would have me reach. As always, I will try to obey.
