Scripture:
“…but all the leaders answered, ‘We have given them our oath by the Lord, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.’” ~Joshua 9:19-20

Observation:
The Gibeonites basically con the Israelites into sparing them. The leaders of the Israelites, though, are so serious about the contract they made that they refuse to break it, even though it was arrived at by fraud. They fear the wrath of God for breaking their oath. They feel at least somewhat responsible for allowing themselves to be deceived.

Application:
Do I view my promises as seriously as the Israelites (an evidently God as well) did? Perhaps this is partly why a another verse in the Bible encourages us not to swear oaths at all. The Israelites certainly believed that their oath bound them, even if not arrived at honestly. The lesson is to go to God and go to wise brothers and sisters before binding oneself in a contract and to not be hasty or gullible when dealing with people. Apart from that, I must keep my promises.

Prayer:
Father, help me to keep my promises and to not over-promise on anything. Also, help me choose wise counselors who are discerning and godly so that I will not be deceived and required to keep a promise made under false pretenses. Help me to deal fairly with others and not be treated unfairly myself.
