Scripture:
“‘So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?'” ~Galatians 3:5

Observation:
Paul is pointing out to the Galatians that it isn’t adherence to a set of rules that “earned” them the Holy Spirit, but their faith in Jesus. This passage is important today, since many fall into thinking that being a Christian is mostly about following rules. But, Paul points out that the Spirit is given through faith, not piety.

Application:
First, to the extent that I do, I need to stop expecting rule-following from non-believers and new believers. The Spirit will help produce heart (and therefore behavior) change, but faith is what should be encouraged, not obedience to rules.

Prayer:
Father, send me Your Spirit fresh, not because I already follow “the rules”, but because I have continued faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Help me to not expect behavior from others, but help them have faith and profess it. Spirit, help me to grow in my likeness to Christ, as I want to be free of my sin.
