Scripture:
“When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?'” ~Galatians 2:14

Observation:
Paul is calling Cephas out for demanding a standard from Gentiles that he himself does not uphold. Cephas is being a hypocrite and forcing standards that the Gospel itself does not require.

Application:
I know that I have been guilty at times of criticizing others, particularly non-believers, for not living by standards that aren’t even required by the Gospel. I’m sure there have also been times where I’ve been guilty of the same failing.

Prayer:
Father, I don’t want to be a hypocrite. The unbelieving world seems to hate hypocrisy in the church most of all. Help me to be in line with the truth of the gospel without inventing or expecting standards that You don’t expect. Help me to be full of grace toward others and at the same time give me wisdom and bravery if I am to confront anyone in the church about hypocrisy, but mostly I just want it out of me.
