Scripture:
“As he taught, Jesus said, ‘Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.’” ~Mark 12:38-40

Observation:
Jesus really doesn’t seem to get along with the rulers of His day. He is constantly calling them out for their hypocrisy. I wonder who Jesus would speak against today. Who are the modern day “teachers of the law?” Certainly pastors who use their pulpit to glorify themselves instead of God. I think also probably nearly all politicians, who use what should be a platform to serve others as a tool for self-enrichment and -aggrandizement. Jesus elsewhere says that those who want to be great should serve others.

Application:
I need to be on the watch for the hypocrisy of those in authority and be careful around them. Jesus is warning us not to follow these rulers. I will only follow those that serve, not those that would rule. Also, any position of authority I find myself in, I must be careful not to use it as a platform for building myself up at others’ expense.

Prayer:
Father, help me be wise to see which people have authority from You (servants of others) and those that do not. Do not let me be deceived by wicked rulers, but only listen to those who are serving in Your name.
