Scripture:
“Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, ‘Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.'” ~Luke 13:1-3

Observation:
Very often people believe that if something bad happens to you, you must be especially deserving of it. You got what was coming to you. Jesus comes out clearly against this idea but points out that we are ultimately all doomed unless we repent.

Application:
The hard times in my life and in my family’s is not necessarily my fault. Sometimes I worry that I’m being punished for some wrong I may have done. Jesus is saying that the misfortunes that I suffer aren’t necessarily punishment. Repentance is how we avoid ultimate punishment.

Prayer:
God, sometimes I wonder if bad things that happen to me are a result of my sin. At times I have also judged others’ misfortunes to be a result of their sin. Remind me that this isn’t the case. I’m not necessarily better than others or they better than me. Misfortune can truly be random, but help me to repent of those things I need to repent for.
