Day 8
Scripture:
“Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.’ When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.” Genesis 22:2, 9-10

Observation:
Abraham is asked by God to do something amazingly difficult and completely inexplicable. He is asked to sacrifice the son he waited for until he was an old man. The verse doesn’t tell us Abraham’s mental state, but I can’t imagine that he wasn’t tormented. I don’t think I could have obeyed in this instance. But Abraham does. He is willing to give up anything in obedience to God.

Application:
I want to obey God’s will. At least most of the time I do. Am I willing to give up the things that dominate my time and energy in order to be obedient? Probably not always. I need to be aware of the things I might place ahead of God in importance and at least try to be willing to let go of a little control.

Prayer:
God, what are the things that You want me to give up in order to demonstrate my willingness to be obedient? Or, what are the things that You might not even want me to give up, just be willing to give up? Show me the things that are most important to me and help me surrender control to You.
