Scripture:
“The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.” ~Genesis 6:5-6

Observation:
What’s really interesting here is that God is troubled at the evil of mankind. It doesn’t say He’s angry or wrathful. He’s sad.

Application:
How much of my own sin or more a point of sadness for God than a point of anger? This verse seems to at least partly reinforce what can be a fairly controversial idea; that God isn’t mad at me when I sin, he’s disappointed and sad. I don’t think this removes the consequences of sin, though, since the world was still destroyed by flood. Perhaps viewing God more as delighted by faithfulness and saddened by sin instead of angry can help me be less likely to rebel against what I might wrongly perceive as God’s unnecessary strictness.

Prayer:
God, help me to see you as you are. It seems hard to know you. Help me know you better. Also, help me to see as you see. I want to be saddened by the things that sadden you and angered by the things that anger you.

It’s always fun when listening to the genealogies over the years how more and more names become really significant.
